If you live here, though, you may get tired of the boring old tourist traps, so here are a few fresh suggestions for livening up your LA summer. Set your adt security system and get in the car – summer fun isn’t far away!
Venice Beach – Ditch the trendy Malibu scene and head down to the nitty gritty part of the beach. There’s plenty of people watching to be had and cheesy souvenirs to be bought…Venice is what you make of it!
Downtown – When’s the last time you went downtown for anything other than an event at the Staple’s Center? There’s a thriving cultural and art scene in downtown LA and it’s up to you to head the opposite direction and check it out.
The Observatory – Many people see the observatory but don’t really know what’s up there – turns out you can check out the stars as well as some of the best views in the city. That’s worth the trip!

When visiting LA you should definitely plan time to stop by the La Brea Tar Pits and Hancock Park which are considered a piece of urban Los Angeles that embraces prehistoric times simultaneously. Tar (or asphalt) has been seeping up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years and over the centuries many of the animals that came to drink the water that often covered the tar fell in, often to be preserved over time. Mammoths, dire wolves, short-faced bear and even the saber-toothed cat are some of the many fossils to be found in the pits; but only one human skeleton (that of a woman dating back to approximately 9000 BP) has been found to date. Along with the animal and human fossils are insect and plant fossilizations as well including pollen grains, raspberry, coastal live oak, and California juniper. As far as etymology is concerned, Brea is Spanish for “tar,” and this naming makes sense since it was a group of Spanish explorers who made the first recorded entry of the tar pits during an expedition in 1769. For those history buffs, the George C. Page Museum (which is part of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County) is built next to the tar pits and not only tells the history of the tar pits but provides specimens collected over time as well. The museum is open from 9:30 to 5:00 daily is admission is 7 (with the exception of the first Tuesday of each month when admission is free).

If you’re all about getting a bargain these days, then a trip to LA should definitely be on your radar. Following are a few of the more well-known areas where bargains galore can be had by all:

Fashion District: While most of the business being done in this area is between wholesaler and reseller, retail shopping is also a part of the landscape. There are over 1000 stores that sell to the public at wholesale prices (which means bargains up to 70 off retail pricing). Stores within the fashion district are independent which means you’ll not see major retailer names; but you can bet a lot of the merchandise can also be seen in those same major retailer’s windows.

Flower District: This area is focused predominately along 8th Street (in the Fashion District) and the 700 block of S. Wall Street and affords virtually every type of cut flower, potted plant, and dried and silk flowers that you would find in major floral retailers all at bargain prices. The Los Angeles Flower District is the largest wholesale flower district in the US.

Jewelry District: This district is widely known for offering a vast array of precious gems, watches, and all types of fine jewelry at process up to 70 below normal retail. There are over 5000 vendors to choose from so you’re sure to see just about every piece of jewelry that is available for purchase all in one neat area between 5th and 6th Streets along Broadway Avenue, Hill Street, and Olive Street. Take your time while here and enjoy the sparkle!

If time permits, check out the fabric district or the children’s wear district. With the economy being what it is these days, maybe a trip to LA for the sole purpose of shopping isn’t so unusual!

This year’s X Games competition is being held in Los Angeles. Though this is the 7th consecutive year that the games have been held in the city, fans and competitors alike seem to be just as excited. Events will be held at the STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre, the Los Angeles Coliseum and L.A. LIVE from July 29 to August 1. There are extremely high expectations for this year’s competition, after last year set the record for the most watched X games ever. The Staples Center will be home to most of the Moto competitions and L.A. Live and Nokia Theatre will host BMX and Skateboarding events. The L.A. Coliseum will see the most diverse competitions with Moto, BMX, Skateboard, and Rally Car. ESPN is the sponsor for these games and will be drastically increasing its coverage of this year’s competition, as a result of the high ratings it has received in recent years.Unlike team sports with a set list of rules and way for playing the game, this type of competition is all about adding new creative tricks to the repertoire and trying even more daring stunts than the last one. As a result, it is no surprise that this year’s games will feature a few new events. SuperRally is basically a sprint on wheels. This particular competition is a derivative of European Rallycross. Another new medal will be given for Real Street. Street Skating Pros have filmed videos of their best street stunts. These videos can be watched and voted for online and, at the games, will be judged by a panel to determine the winner.Tickets for the games are now on sale and can be purchased online. If you have any interest in this sport, you should consider taking a trip to L.A. Tickets can be bought for relatively cheap and there’s always plenty to do while you’re in the city.

If you’re traveling to Los Angeles with the family or just want to relive old childhood memories, the original Disneyland Park, located in Anaheim, is a must-do of your vacation. Since its opening in 1955, it has seen more visitors than any other theme park in the world. In addition to the famous Main Street, U.S.A., a Midwest style town designed to resemble the childhood of Walt Disney, there are four main sections of the park. The four original park areas include Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland each house an array of rides and exhibits. You can take pictures and hangout with characters that roam throughout the park and watch daily parades and ceremonies, which usually occur on Main Street.Adjacent to the Disneyland Park is Disney’s California Adventure, which has been open since 2001. The park consists of five sections that are meant to resemble famous areas of California. This park features many aspects that are geared to a more adult crowd. The California Screamin’ roller coaster, the Tower of Terror and the Golden Vine Winery give parents and teenagers plenty to enjoy. A new water and light show is currently attracting large crowds at California Adventure. World of Color utilizes over 1200 fountains, lasers and lights each night at 9:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. in Paradise Bay.Children from ages 3-9 can visit one of these two parks for 62.00 and tickets for ages 10 are 72.00. However, there are a number of special packages that can be found on the parks’ websites for multi-day, multi-park admission. If you’re planning to spend more than one day here and want to visit both parks, you should definitely consider one of these passes. There is certainly more to do than anyone could fit into one day.

Los Angeles is a city packed with fun, thrills and adventure. Knowing how to find your way from one exciting activity to the next is key to a successful trip. Fortunately this city has an impressive public transportation system equipped with subways, light rails and buses so you’ll never find yourself stuck without a ride. The Metro Rail System combines these various types of transportation systems with six different lines. Each line is distinguished by a color, 2 of which are subways, 3 are light rail and one rapid bus line. This system reaches to the outer limits of the Los Angeles area and continues to expand. Schedules and fares can be found on the LA metro website. You can also check for any delays or alerts online.A bus system using three different methods of travel make this another viable way to travel the streets of Los Angeles. The Metro Local is useful for shorter trips and makes numerous and frequent stops along major cities, while the Metro Rapid stops less frequently and has a device for manipulating traffic signals for faster travel. Finally, the Metro Express is mainly a freeway system with fewer stops, covering longer distances.DASH Downtown is a rapid bus system covering the downtown area via six routes, with pickups at each stop coming every 5 to 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on the weekend. Another useful transportation system is FlyAway. These buses offer 7 each way trips between downtown and Los Angeles International Airport, a convenient method for travelers.
